In the current economic climate used cars are still a popular choice amongst many people as there are some great deals to be found, they are often a better option than a new car. Although buying a used car does mean you have to be really careful and pay attention to the condition of the car as well as its history.

If you choose to buy privately then check everything very carefully because they are all usually ‘sold as seen’. The first thing you can do is check the tyres to ensure the tread depth is the ok and that there is no damage to the side-walls. Check all four tyres for wear because if there is uneven wear then the wheels may not be aligned properly and this will need correcting immediately.

Check the body work for any scratches and bumps that were not mentioned on the advert as this will allow you to haggle with the seller about the price and get more money off the total. Checking the steering wheel to ensure it rotates fully from lock to lock without anything unusual such as excessive vibration. You should also check and test the gears that should be smooth and not grind at all.

Checking the engine is one of the most important things to do before buying a car. Check the oil dipstick and the filler, if you find any brown sludge then this indicates the engine is damaged and will require expensive repairs. This is normally not worth it so just walk away from the deal. The engine should rev evenly and idle smoothly.

Make sure there is not a large amount of smoke coming from the exhaust as this shows problems with the engine. The engine may have been steam cleaned and this can hide problems so be suspicious of a clean engine bay but it does not necessarily mean there is something wrong.

A test drive should last for about half an hour and you should try to drive on different surfaces so you can test the performance of the car. Listen for any unusual noises that may be coming from the car and ensure that all the gadgets and accessories that will come with the car are in good working order. As long as you are happy with the car then carry out a car check on it which will show any finance owed and will inform you of any accidents it has been involved in.

Whether you are buying a new or used car think about your decision, if you need car credit then search online. If you have had problems in the past then there are also bad car finance deals available if you have a poor credit history.
